Ages 3-5: "Mommy/Daddy is away helping people"
Use simple terms. Avoid complex judicial concepts. Reassure them that they are safe, loved, and that the parent will return.
Ages 6-9: "Why is Daddy/Mommy away?"
Explain that rules exist for everyone, and sometimes grown-ups have to take a time-out to resolve rule issues. Emphasize it is not their fault.
Ages 10-12: "The justice system and what it means"
Introduce basic legal rules. Discuss how courts decide terms, and answer their direct questions honestly without burdening them with worry.
Ages 13-15: "Understanding the legal process"
Engage in more mature discussions about rehabilitation, compliance, and guidelines. Keep lines of communication open.

Discuss reentry preparation, support mechanisms, and how the family unit will collaborate to build a stable transition pathway.
