Estimated Release Timeline
"Transfer" is the date BOP custody typically ends and home confinement or halfway house placement begins, subject to BOP discretion and space availability. "Final Release" is the date all supervision under this calculation ends. Both are estimates, not guarantees.
How These Numbers Are Calculated ("The Working")
1. Good Conduct Time (GCT): By federal law, inmates receive up to 54 days of good time credit per year of sentence imposed (~14.79% reduction). This is applied from day 1 for any sentence greater than 12 months.
2. Prior Jail / Remand Credit: Any time spent locked up in county jail or non-BOP custody before sentencing/surrender is credited day-for-day off your prison sentence. However, this period does NOT qualify for First Step Act programming credits because program credits are only earned while in a designated BOP facility.
3. RDAP drug program reduction: Completing the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP) grants a sentence reduction of up to 12 months. The reduction scale is:
• Sentence of 37+ months: 12 months off.
• Sentence of 31–36 months: 9 months off.
• Sentence of 24–30 months: 6 months off.
• Sentence under 24 months: Not eligible for sentence reduction.
4. First Step Act (FSA) Credits: Eligible inmates earn 10 to 15 days of early release credit for every 30 days of productive programming.
• Up to 365 days (12 months) of earned credits are applied directly to advance your release date from prison.
• Any excess credits earned beyond 12 months are applied to speed up your transfer to home confinement or a halfway house.
• Note: The first 6 months of an inmate's prison term are when assessments are conducted, programs are assigned, and credits accumulate; early release credits cannot be formally applied to advance release dates until they are fully earned and documented.
* Calculations are estimates based on standard BOP policies: Good Conduct Time is calculated at 54 days per year (approx 14.8%). RDAP reduction depends on sentence length (12 months off for 37+ months, 9 months for 31-36 months, 6 months for 24-30 months). First Step Act credits assume maximum program completion (15 days earned per month, capped at 1 year early release, with excess applied to home confinement). Actual outcomes are decided entirely by the Bureau of Prisons and probation officers.
